WHEREAS, on December 3, 2022, the Pearl-Cohn High School Firebirds football team took on the Anderson County High School Mavericks in the TSSAA Class 4A BlueCross Bowl; and
WHEREAS, this Firebirds team has the most wins of any Metro Nashville High School for the last ten years, with 12 wins this season; and
WHEREAS, the Firebirds won 4A Region 5, beating Haywood High School in the division championship; and
WHEREAS, over the past ten years, the Firebirds have represented Nashville in three state championship games, in 2015, 2019, and 2022, and have gone to the state semi-finals seven times. Pearl-Cohn won back-to-back state championship titles in 1996 and 1997; and
WHEREAS, in addition to athletic excellence, academics remain a top priority for the team, with an average senior GPA of 3.30 with impressive ACT scores; and
WHEREAS, the team historically has a 100% high school graduation rate and a 70% college graduation rate, well above the national average; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of Coach Tony Brunetti over the past ten years, 65 students that have been accepted into college. Of those former students who are currently active, 11 are in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivisions, 10 are in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision, and 5 are in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Five students currently play at HBCUs; and
WHEREAS, the Pearl-Cohn Firebirds have had four players go into the NFL, including Keyshawn Vaughn who currently plays for Tampa Bay Buccaneers and volunteers at Pearl-Cohn; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council congratulates the Pearl-Cohn High School Firebirds on the completion of their football season and wishes the team members success in their future endeavors.
