A resolution recognizing April 28, 2024, as Workers Memorial Day.

WHEREAS, each April, Workers Memorial Day is observed as a day to remember those who have killed or injured on the job; and
WHEREAS, this is also a day to recommit to the fight for safe and healthful workplaces for all; and
WHEREAS, April 28 is chosen as Workers Memorial Day because the Occupational Health and Safety Administration ("OSHA") was created on April 28, 1971; and
WHEREAS, while great strides have been made to protect workers in the years since the creation of OSHA, the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics show that 5,486 fatal work injuries occurred in the U.S. in 2022; and
WHEREAS, this year, the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, illustrates the dangers faced by workers every day - which is felt particularly by Hispanic workers, who are overrepresented in the construction industry; and
WHEREAS, on Workers Memorial Day, Nashville remembers two tragic deaths that have occurred on worksites in recent years; and
WHEREAS, Gustavo Enrique Ramirez died after a fall while working at a hotel site in Nashville in June 2020. He was only 16 years old; and
WHEREAS, Denis Geovani Ba Che was working on the roof of Glencliff High School's gymnasium in October 2023 when he fell to his death. He was only 20 years old; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Workers Memorial, remember the lives of Gustavo Enrique Ramirez and Denis Geovani Ba Che, and rededicate to the fight for safe workplaces for all.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing April 28, 2024, as Workers Memorial Day in Nashville and Davidson County.
