A Resolution recognizing and thanking Reese Witherspoon for funding Metro Nashville Public Schools classroom projects.

WHEREAS, on November 10, 2020, actress, producer, and entrepreneur Reese Witherspoon funded nearly $175,000 worth of classroom projects for Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) teachers; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Witherspoon funded classroom projects through DonorsChoose, a nonprofit that connects teachers and donors across the country; and
WHEREAS, earlier that week, MNPS officials sent an email to all teachers notifying them of Ms. Witherspoon's plan, and encouraged them to write about their projects and post them to the DonorsChoose website; and
WHEREAS, DonorsChoose was created in 2000 by Charles Best, a teacher at a Bronx public high school, who noticed how much personal income he and his colleagues were spending on school supplies; and
WHEREAS, the nonprofit's mission is to move us closer to a nation where students in every community have the tools and experiences they need for a great education; and
WHEREAS, since its creation, DonorsChoose has fulfilled over 1.7 million classroom project requests; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Witherspoon funded 144 MNPS projects, helped 16,948 students, and 126 teachers across 56 schools; and
WHEREAS, MNPS teachers requested items such as personal protective equipment, books for students, and virtual learning supplies; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Witherspoon has a history of supporting teachers, including earlier this year when she gave away dresses from her clothing brand, Draper James, to teachers as a way to say "thank you"; and
WHEREAS, Reese Witherspoon was raised in Nashville and it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize her contributions to supporting the city's teachers and students.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
