A resolution recognizing May 22, 2025, as Harvey Milk Day in Nashville and Davidson County.
body
WHEREAS, Harvey Milk Day was first recognized by the state of California in 2009, which passed a law to annually remember the life of Harvey Milk and recognize his accomplishments as one of the first openly LGBTQ elected officials in the United States and a leader of the American Civil Rights Movement; and
WHEREAS, Harvey Milk was an inspiration to members of the LGBTQ community and has served as an example to many LGBTQ people who did not believe they could serve in public office; and
WHEREAS, the Victory Institute has recognized 1,336 local, state, and federal elected officials who identify as LGBTQ now serve on local, state, and national levels; and
WHEREAS, Harvey Milk both supported the LGBTQ community and advocated for all minorities. He believed in safe, strong neighborhoods and supported affordable housing, childcare for working facilities, public safety, and equal rights for all; and
WHEREAS, Harvey Milk took office as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1978, where he held office for one year before he was tragically killed; and
WHEREAS, Harvey Milk's contributions to the cause of equality for all people have been recognized in the following decades including the issuance of a US Postal Stamp and as the posthumous recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom; and
WHEREAS, Harvey Milk has been quoted as stating that "Hope will never be silent," and members of the LGBTQ community - in Nashville, the United States, and around the world - still face discrimination and violence rooted in the same hatred from which Milk died. They deserve hope, and cannot abide our silence; and
