title
A resolution recognizing November 15, 2025, as America Recycles Day in Nashville and Davidson County.

body
WHEREAS, America Recycles Day is observed annually on November 15 to promote waste reduction and recycling across the country; and
WHEREAS, the observance was started by two Texas Council of Environmental Quality employees in 1994, as Texas Recycles Day, to boost recycling in Texas. The first national celebration of America Recycles Day in 1997 was announced by the National Recycling Coalition with former Vice President Al Gore. In 1999, former President Bill Clinton proclaimed the day to be a national observance in order to promote recycling across the country; and
WHEREAS, waste disposal is a challenge to all communities and has environmental, economic, and environmental justice impacts; and
WHEREAS, in December 2019, Nashville's Solid Waste Region Board approved a Zero Waste Master Plan to lead the region in achieving zero waste. The plan was adopted by Metropolitan Council in August 2021. The goal of zero waste is possible, as increasing numbers of residents and businesses reduce, reuse and recycle; and
WHEREAS, recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals, prevents pollution by limiting the need to mine raw materials, saves energy, supports American manufacturing, and creates new jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries in the United States; and
WHEREAS, producing and processing the materials used every day causes more than a third of the world's greenhouse gas emissions and landfills are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, both contributing to the threat of climate change. Recycling also helps to address the risk of climate change; and
WHEREAS, Nashville and Davidson County affirm the importance of environmental stewardship and recognizes the value of reduce, reuse, and recycle to achieve the region's Zero Waste goals.
