A resolution recognizing Gretchen Walsh on setting the world record in the 100-meter butterfly.

WHEREAS, on June 15, 2024, swimmer Gretchen Walsh made history by setting the world record in the women’s 100-meter butterfly; and

 

WHEREAS, Walsh was born in Nashville and graduated from Harpeth Hall School in 2021, where she won numerous high school state titles; and

 

WHEREAS, Walsh currently attends the University of Virginia; and

 

WHEREAS, at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials when she shattered the women’s 100-meter butterfly world record at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis; and

 

WHEREAS, her time was 55.18 - breaking the previous record of 55.48, set by Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjöström in 2016; and

 

WHEREAS, she has received national attention for her swimming since 2015. In 2016, she became the youngest swimmer to qualify for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2020, Walsh narrowly missed a spot on the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team; and

 

WHEREAS, now, Walsh has clinched a spot on the U.S. Olympic team and will compete in Paris in July; and

 

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Nashvillian Gretchen Walsh on her impressive athletic accomplishments, including setting the world record in the 100-meter butterfly.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

 

Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Gretchen Walsh on her world record in the women’s 100-meter butterfly and wishes her success at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

 

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
