title

A resolution recognizing October 11, 2025, as National Coming Out Day in Nashville and Davidson County.

body

WHEREAS, National Coming Out Day has been observed for more than 35 years and serves as a celebration of coming out to loved ones and a campaign to raise awareness around LGBTQ+ civil rights issues still prevalent across the country; and

WHEREAS, the event was first organized by Jean O’Leary and Dr. Robert Eichberg with the National Coming Out Day organization and first observed on October 11, 1988, the first anniversary of the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights; and

WHEREAS, National Coming Out Day is also an opportunity for individuals to “come out” to their family, friends, and others, to heighten visibility in order to educate and inform their neighbors about the true diversity of the LGBTQ+ community; and

WHEREAS, coming out and sharing one’s authentic self with others is not always safe or easy, but it serves as a powerful key to breaking down the barriers faced by LGBTQ+ people; and

WHEREAS, the Nashville chapter of Human Rights Campaign plans to celebrate National Coming Out Day on October 11, 2025; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council go on record as celebrating October 11 as National Coming Out Day.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing October 11, 2025, as National Coming Out Day in Nashville and Davidson County.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
