A resolution recognizing the legacy of the Stonewall Uprising and its lasting impact on the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

WHEREAS, in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, LGBTQ+ individuals at the Stonewall Inn in New York City stood up against a police raid and systemic oppression, sparking days of protests and a national movement for equality; and
WHEREAS, the Stonewall Uprising became a catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement in the United States and around the world, inspiring generations to live openly, fight for justice, and demand equal treatment under the law; and
WHEREAS, courageous trans women of color, including Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, were instrumental in the events of Stonewall and in laying the foundation for activism that continues to this day; and
WHEREAS, the bravery of those who stood at Stonewall serves as a reminder of the power of collective resistance, especially in the face of discrimination, violence, and legal persecution; and
WHEREAS, Metro Nashville acknowledges the importance of preserving the history of Stonewall and recognizing its impact on our ongoing efforts to create a more just and inclusive society for LGBTQ+ residents; and
WHEREAS, the legacy of Stonewall calls on each of us to continue the fight for equality, dignity, and freedom, particularly at a time when LGBTQ+ rights are under renewed attack across the nation; and
WHEREAS, Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall Uprising and honors those who have fought-and continue to fight-for LGBTQ+ visibility, acceptance, and justice.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN COUNCIL OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby honors the legacy of the Stonewall Uprising and reaffirms its commitment to the protection and advancement of the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals in Nashville and beyond.
