A Resolution honoring Clara Mohammed School of Nashville on its 50th Anniversary.

WHEREAS, Sister Clara Mohammed, the wife of the Honorable Elijah Mohammad, pioneered the Nation of Islam's primary and secondary independent schools in 1931. By the 1950's she had established these schools on a national scale, which was groundbreaking in both Black and Muslim communities; and
WHEREAS, the Nation's school system was instituted by Fard Muhammad, who called it "The University of Islam", but the first classes were held in Clara Muhamad's home where she was the first teacher of the school system; and
WHEREAS, the Clara Mohammed School of Nashville was established here in Nashville, TN in 1971 and offers education from Pre-K through 8th grade. The mission of the school is to provide a superior education, foundation, and structure for students to be leaders in whatever field they choose; and
WHEREAS, students are accepted at the age of three and many finish high school at the age of sixteen and go on to college. Clara Mohammed School also routinely hosts science and business fairs for students interested in entrepreneurial and science career paths; and
WHEREAS, graduates of the Clara Mohammed School have gone on to work in diverse fields such as medicine, law, education, and politics. Many of the alumni give back to the community in different ways, including joining outreach programs for the homeless; and
WHEREAS, Imam Yusuf Abdullah has been the director of the Clara Mohammad School since its establishment 50 years ago. His wife, Sister Mahasin Abdullah, has been the school's principal since 1977. The Abdullahs have been instrumental in keeping the Clara Mohammad School in operation by raising funds for the school and running the school for years; and
WHEREAS, Clara Mohammed School's philosophy is that every child deserves a solid academic, social, and moral foundation; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan County Council recogni...
