A resolution recognizing the 150th anniversary of Arlington United Methodist Church.

WHEREAS, Arlington United Methodist Church has been a pillar of faith, community service, and spiritual growth in the community since its founding in 1874; and
WHEREAS, what was first founded as the Bryan Academy to educate the children of the area in the years following the Civil War became a Sunday School which in time outgrew the existing building; and
WHEREAS, land was donated and funds were raised to build the first church building. Benjamin Turbeveille, who built the Maxwell House and other Nashville landmarks, was selected to build the new building; and
WHEREAS, in order for the new church to be accepted into the United Methodist Church all debts on the building needed to be paid, therefore Mr. Dempsey Weaver paid off the construction debts, Dr. J.H. Calendar of the Central State Hospital donated the pulpit, altar rails, and flower stands, which all are still used today; and
WHEREAS, the church was named Arlington United Methodist Church and the Methodist Conference assigned Rev. Wiley Hill as the church’s first pastor; and
WHEREAS, for 150 years, Arlington United Methodist Church has provided a place of worship, fellowship, and outreach, touching countless lives through its ministries and programs; and
WHEREAS, the church has been a steadfast presence, offering support and hope to individuals and families through times of joy and times of challenge, embodying the spirit of compassion and love that is central to its mission; and
WHEREAS, Arlington United Methodist Church has been instrumental in various community initiatives, including food drives, educational programs, and community outreach services, positively impacting countless lives; and
WHEREAS, the leadership, congregation, and friends of Arlington United Methodist Church have shown remarkable dedication and resilience, continually adapting to meet the changing needs of the community while remaining rooted in their core values and beliefs; and
WHEREAS, the 150th anniversary of Arlington United Methodist Church is an opportunity to reflect on the rich history of the church, to honor those who have contributed to its legacy, and to look forward to a future of continued faith and service; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council celebrates the 150th anniversary of Arlington United Methodist Church and expresses appreciation to the church for its many years of service to its congregation and the community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the 150th anniversary of Arlington United Methodist Church.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
