WHEREAS, the Southern AIDS Coalition founded Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day in 2019 as a day for individuals, communities, and organizations can unite to call attention to the disproportionate number of people living with HIV in the American South; and
WHEREAS, the event provides a national moment to raise awareness, erase HIV/AIDS related stigma and discrimination, and advocate for new and necessary resources and solutions to stem the tide of HIV/AIDS in the South; and
WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that, in 2022, more than 579,900 people were living with HIV in the South, that 52 percent of all new HIV diagnoses were in the South, and that approximately 2,379 HIV-related deaths occurred in the South; and
WHEREAS, the HIV/AIDS crisis in the South requires engagement and collective, bold, and innovative strategies to reduce these disparities; and
WHEREAS, people living with HIV in the South face stigma and discrimination that often results in lack of access to high-quality health care and essential support services; and
WHEREAS, those living with HIV in Nashville and Davidson County must have the support and the necessary resources to lead healthy lives, and the community must do its part to reduce HIV-related stigma; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize August 20, 2025, as Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day in Nashville and Davidson County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing August 20, 2025, as Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day in Nashville and Davidson County.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
