A resolution recognizing the 20th anniversary of Nashville in Harmony.

WHEREAS, 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of Nashville in Harmony; and
WHEREAS, Nashville in Harmony (NiH) was founded in 2004 as Tennessee’s first musical arts organization specifically created for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, and their allies; and
WHEREAS, since their founding, several other similar organizations have formed around the state, including NiH’s own Major Minors Youth Chorus and the Nashville in Harmony Pride Band, who presented their debut performance during the 2023 Nashville Pride Parade; and
WHEREAS, the organization always aims for musical excellence by selecting challenging choral literature for mixed voices and by choosing music with lyrics that encourages others to make a difference in the world; and
WHEREAS, NiH’s mission is to use music to build community and create social change; and
WHEREAS, they perform a diverse selection of music aligned with their mission, from classical pieces with a twist to pop, issue-driven music to pieces that are purely fun; and
WHEREAS, NiH’s values are community, artistic excellence, and inclusion. The organization connects members and makes all members feel like an important part of the community; commits to performing work that is musically excellent, engaging, and transformative in service of their mission; and is welcoming and open to all who support the advancement of rights for LGBTQIA+ people regardless of race, ethnicity, gender expression, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and physical ability; and
WHEREAS, in celebration of their 20th anniversary, NiH teamed up with the Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra on May 7, 2024, to put on a pair of sold-out themed concerts marking the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the 20th anniversary of Nashville in Harmony and celebrates their contributions to the city of Nashville and the community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the 20th anniversary of Nashville in Harmony.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
