WHEREAS, on January 9, 2026, Aundra Johnson was involved in an accident with a Metro police vehicle while approaching the intersection of Murfreesboro Pike and Transit Avenue.  As Mr. Johnson was approaching the intersection, a Metro police vehicle attempted to make a left turn onto Murfreesboro Pike from Transit Avenue, causing a collision with Mr. Johnson’s vehicle and injury to him; and,

WHEREAS, after investigation, the Metropolitan Department of Law believes that the settlement listed in Section 1 is fair and reasonable and in the best interest of the Metropolitan Government, and recommends that any and all claims or causes of action brought or that could have been brought by Aundra Johnson related to the events detailed above, be compromised and settled for $50,000, and that this amount be paid from the Self-Insured Liability Fund.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1:                       The Metropolitan Department of Law is authorized to compromise and settle the personal injury claim of Aundra Johnson for the sum of $50,000, with said amount to be paid from the Self-Insured Liability Fund.

Section 2:                       This resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

On January 9, 2026, Aundra Johnson was driving along Murfreesboro Pike. An MNPD officer was stopped at the intersection of Transit Avenue and Murfreesboro Pike. The officer attempted a left turn onto Murfreesboro Pike and collided with Mr. Johnson’s car. The car was declared a total loss. His insurance company was paid $7,002.51 for the value of the car in a separate claim.

 

Mr. Johnson was transported via ambulance to the emergency room with complaints of pain in his chest, abdominals, and lower back along with a thumb laceration. Mr. Johnson went to a different emergency room on the following day with complaints of pain in his left hip, shoulder, and wrist. He received various treatments there to relieve his pain and was advised to seek further treatment from his primary care physician. Mr. Johnson has filed a claim for medical damages.

 

The parties have participated in settlement negotiations and have agreed upon a settlement amount of $50,000. The Department of Law recommends settlement of Mr. Johnson’s claim for $50,000.

 

The MNPD officer involved in the incident was disciplined with a one-day suspension.

 

Fiscal Note: The total settlement amount is $50,000. This settlement, along with Resolution Nos. RS2026-2117, RS2026-2118, RS2026-2130 and RS2026-2133, would be the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th payment, after approval by Metropolitan Council, from the Self-Insured Liability Fund in FY27 for a cumulative total of $507,258. The fund balance would be $12,324,333 after this payment.
