title
A resolution recognizing June 27, 2025, as National HIV Testing Day in Nashville and Davidson County.
body
WHEREAS, National HIV Testing Day, first observed on June 27, 1995, is a day to encourage people to get tested for HIV, know their status, and get connected with care and treatment; and
WHEREAS, ensuring that people know their HIV status is the first step in getting connected to HIV care and treatment for those who are HIV-positive and referring people to preventative treatments if they are HIV-negative; and
WHEREAS, an estimated 4,332 people were living with HIV in Nashville and Davidson County in 2022, according to a report from the Tennessee Department of Health; and
WHEREAS, with linkage to care and following their doctor’s advice, people living with HIV can achieve viral suppression, and when virally suppressed, cannot transmit the HIV virus to others; and
WHEREAS, it is possible to end the HIV epidemic by suppressing the virus so that transmission does not occur, by promoting PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), and by implementing other proven prevention strategies that significantly reduce the risk of acquiring HIV; and
WHEREAS, each year on National HIV Testing Day, people living with HIV/AIDS, community-based organizations, local hospitals, medical providers, and community allies will continue to work collaboratively to overcome all barriers to HIV testing, prevention, and treatment, to challenge stigma and improve education, prevention, and access to care; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper for the Metropolitan Council to recognize National HIV Testing Day and commend those working to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
