title

A resolution honoring the life of Bishop Marcus Campbell.

body

WHEREAS, Bishop Marcus Campbell, Senior Pastor of The Church at Mount Carmel, passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at the age of 49; and

WHEREAS, Bishop Campbell dedicated his life to serving his faith and guiding his congregants on their spiritual journeys, and his impact extended far beyond the pulpit.  His mission to uplift and empower young individuals was especially impactful for those youth who lacked positive role models and struggled with difficult circumstances.  He worked tirelessly with Nashville’s youth through Mount Carmel’s summer youth meals and resources programs and through Bishop’s unique program, ‘Gentlemen And Not Gangsters’ (G.A.N.G.), which served as another option for high-risk teens with gang ties, in hopes of showing them a different life; and

WHEREAS, Bishop Campbell knew firsthand the challenges and barriers in place for the poor or people of color and he transformed his life from a troubled youth to a beacon of hope for the neighborhood.  Despite facing personal challenges, Bishop found solace in his faith and dedicated his life to serving his community.  His love and compassion reached all corners of the North Nashville community and reverberated throughout the entire city; and

WHEREAS, Bishop Campbell recognized the increasing number of young people involved in criminal activities and opened his church as a safe haven for them.  Bishop believed that by intervening in their lives at an early stage, he could help them grow into responsible adults who would positively contribute to society.  Many teenagers who had no father figure at home or faced severe hardships found comfort and guidance in the church that Bishop Campbell created; and

WHEREAS, during this time of mourning, Nashville should remember Bishop Campbell’s extraordinary contributions to the city and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.  May his teachings continue to guide and inspire us; and

WHEREAS, Bishop Marcus Campbell was a true pillar of the community, and it is fitting and proper for the Metropolitan Council to recognize his significant contributions to the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County. He will be remembered for his passion and advocacy for creating opportunities for youth, as well as his sermons, pastoral care, and community outreach initiatives.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as honoring the life of Bishop Marcus Campbell and recognizing his contributions to Nashville and Davidson County.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
