WHEREAS, Westminster Presbyterian Church was originally established as Moore Memorial Presbyterian Church in 1873 and was created by First Presbyterian Church to meet the needs of the growing population on the western edge of Nashville; and

WHEREAS, the original church building was built at 1507-09 Broad Street. During the years that followed, the neighborhood around the church became increasingly commercial and the congregation voted to move in 1935; and

WHEREAS, within a year, the congregation purchased their present site at 3900 West End Avenue and raised enough funds to begin construction and purchase land for use as the Sunday School; and

WHEREAS, shortly thereafter, the congregation changed their name from Moore Memorial to Westminster and saw the church grow in numbers during the 1940s and 1950s; and

WHEREAS, with membership topping 1,800, Westminster began holding two worship services, and to accommodate their rapid growth the church completed two large additions in 1947 and 1960; and

WHEREAS, in 1973, Westminster Presbyterian celebrated its centennial with a weeklong event including three former pastors of the church; and

WHEREAS, in the 1980s and 1990s the church experienced additional membership growth and the resulting construction of a new two-story education wing, music suite, new organs, additional classroom space, and multiple renovations; and

WHEREAS, during the May 2010 flood in Nashville, Westminster Presbyterian answered the call to serve the community and became a staging ground for flood relief. The church’s disaster assistance welcomed thousands of volunteers, repaired hundreds of homes, and administered aid to help people recover; and

WHEREAS, the church’s non-profit organization, Westminster Home Connection, was born out of their flood relief efforts and continues to help people of modest incomes stay in their homes; and

WHEREAS, today, Westminster Presbyterian is over 2,000 members strong and supports a wide variety of ministries through the church and the community; and

WHEREAS, Westminster Presbyterian Church fosters a caring, diverse, and deeply spiritual community that nurtures lives of faith, hope, and love; and

WHEREAS, the church and its congregation commit themselves to worship, study, and service in the local community of Nashville and the world; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council go on record as recognizing the 150th anniversary of Westminster Presbyterian Church and wish them many more years of worship and continued success.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
