A resolution recognizing July 18 through August 17, 2024, as South Asian Heritage Month in Nashville and Davidson County.

WHEREAS, South Asian Heritage Month is celebrated each year from July 18 to August 17; and
WHEREAS, South Asian Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize and appreciate South Asian history and culture and the contributions South Asian Americans have made to America; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council recognizes the vibrant and diverse South Asian community residing in Nashville and Davidson County who trace their roots to countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka; and
WHEREAS, South Asian Heritage Month was first observed in parts of Canada beginning in the 1990s. In 2020, South Asian Heritage Month was first formally recognized in the United Kingdom; and
WHEREAS, while not nationally recognized in the United States, South Asian Heritage Month is still celebrated by many across the country and around the world; and
WHEREAS, South Asian Americans have a long and rich history in the United States, with evidence of South Asian immigration dating back to the 1700s, and their larger presence beginning in the late 19th century; and
WHEREAS, South Asian Americans have faced challenges and discrimination throughout their history, including restrictive immigration acts and legal barriers to citizenship, but have persevered and contributed significantly to various fields, including business, arts, entertainment, politics, and community activism; and
WHEREAS, during South Asian Heritage Month, it is important for all community members to come together to promote mutual respect, understanding, and unity among the diverse communities within Nashville and Davidson County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing July 18 through August 17, 2024, as South Asian Heritage Month in Nashville and Davidson County.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
