WHEREAS, Barbara Frazier was born to a single parent in the heart of North Nashville. She is the second child of her mother’s five children. Barbara graduated from Pearl High School, where she began to develop what would become a tremendous athletic talent in track and field; and

 

WHEREAS, upon graduation from Pearl High School, Barbara attended Tennessee State University (“TSU”) where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. In 2002, she earned a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Supervision from Trevecca Nazarene University; and

 

WHEREAS, Barbara’s natural talents led her to be a great student-athlete while enrolled at TSU. In 1981, she had the honor of becoming a member of the world-famous TSU Tigerbelles. She excelled in her athletic endeavors, and in 1992, she was inducted into TSU’s Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2006, she was also inducted into the Metro Nashville Public Schools Sports Hall of Fame; and

 

WHEREAS, Barbara began her professional teaching career in Metro Nashville Public Schools in 1986. Her first teaching job was at Tom Joy Elementary, where she remained as a teacher for sixteen years. While at Tom Joy, she was named Teacher of the Year in 1986 and named a Golden Apple Teacher in 1987; and

 

WHEREAS, during her tenure as a teacher, she also entered the world of coaching in 1987 at Pearl-Cohn High School as an assistant coach. After a five-year coaching career at Pearl-Cohn, she moved to Meigs Magnet Middle School to become a head coach. There, she coached volleyball and track and started the first girls’ basketball program; and

 

WHEREAS, under her tutelage, Meigs became a power in all three athletic arenas. She coached volleyball, track, and girls’ basketball for seven consecutive years. During her tenure at Meigs, Coach Frazier was named Coach of the Year several times. Before going into administration, Barbara also served as an assistant track coach at Maplewood and assistant basketball coach at Hunters Lane High School; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2002, her career trajectory led her into school leadership as a building-level school administrator when was appointed Executive Principal of Hermitage Elementary, and the rest, as they say, is history. In July of 2012, she was named the executive principal of Gower Elementary School in West Nashville; and

 

WHEREAS, Principal Frazier’s friends describe her as courageous, loyal and passionate with a heart for children and making a difference in the world; and

 

WHEREAS, Principal Frazier will retire at the end of the 2024 school year after 37 years of service with Metro Nashville Public Schools; and

 

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council congratulate Principal Frazier on her retirement from Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools and recognize her decades leadership in Nashville and Davidson County.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

 

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as thanking Barbara Frazier for her years of service to Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools and wishes her well upon the occasion of her retirement.

 

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
