A resolution recognizing the work of the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office to warn residents of Nashville and Davidson County of various scamming efforts and urging collaboration among state and local law enforcement to prevent any further harm to Nashvillians.
body
WHEREAS, scammers have tried to scam residents of Nashville and Davidson County impersonating the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office (“DCSO”) and attempting to deceive others; and
WHEREAS, these scammers call, often from blocked numbers, requesting large sums of money be sent via cryptocurrency or other forms to clear purported debts and fees under the threat of arrest or imprisonment; and
WHEREAS, these impersonators have refined their schemes, targeting the families of those who are already in custody and assuming identities of real deputies and court officials over the phone; and
WHEREAS, these claims are always false. DCSO will never ask for money as any payments required will be requested by the court and any payments made to the local, state, or federal governments will not be accepted in cryptocurrency; and
WHEREAS, in the months and years since these scams began, former Sheriff Daron Hall and his deputies have worked tirelessly to inform the public that these claims are not true, whether through interactions with local media or directly assuaging residents who have been threatened by these schemes; and
WHEREAS, scams involving the impersonation of law enforcement are a national issue. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 17,367 people reported being victims of government impersonation scams in 2024, with losses totaling $405,624,084; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper for the Metropolitan Council to engage further, denounce the scams that have deceived Nashvillians, and encourage DCSO, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, and other state and local law enforcement to focus on this effort to harm residents of Nashville and Davidson County.
