A resolution recognizing the 35th anniversary of Woodcuts Gallery and Framing.

WHEREAS, on September 17, 2022, Woodcuts Gallery and Framing celebrated the 35th anniversary of their business; and
WHEREAS, owner Nathaniel Harris opened Woodcuts Gallery and Framing on September 18, 1987; and
WHEREAS, Harris leased a building from Fisk University and spent five months renovating the dilapidated property; and
WHEREAS, Woodcuts Gallery and Framing is located on Jefferson Street in the heart of North Nashville; and
WHEREAS, Nathaniel Harris is a founding member of the Jefferson Street United Merchants Partnership (J.U.M.P.) and was instrumental in revitalizing the historic Jefferson Street corridor; and
WHEREAS, shortly after opening, Woodcuts was named "Business of the Year" in 1987, and went on to be featured in D?cor Magazine in the early 90s; and
WHEREAS, Nathaniel Harris has been committed to making a difference in the North Nashville community, and Woodcuts continues to serve as a ray of hope for aspiring entrepreneurs, youth, and college students; and
WHEREAS, over the years, Woodcuts has demonstrated its dedication to the community by participating in programs such as PENCIL, a program that helps the community invest in schools to bridge the resource gaps, provides adult role models for students, and exposure to workforce opportunities; and
WHEREAS, Woodcuts helped change the course of economic development on Jefferson Street and became a hub for artists including Ludie Amos, Michael McBride, Gregory Ridley, Jamaal Sheats, and James Threallkill; and
WHEREAS, the business served as an anchor location for the Jefferson Street Art Crawl from 2017-2019; and
WHEREAS, in celebration of its 35th anniversary, Woodcuts Gallery and Framing received a historical marker from the Metro Historical Commission recognizing its cultural significance in the North Nashville community; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council celeb...
