WHEREAS, the World Cup is an international association football competition played by the senior men's national soccer teams of the members of the F?d?ration Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body; and
WHEREAS, the World Cup is the most prestigious association football tournament in the world as well as the most widely viewed and followed sporting event in the world, exceeding even the Olympic Games; and
WHEREAS, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first tournament with the expanded 48-team format and will require world-class facilities and infrastructure to ensure a successful tournament; and
WHEREAS, Nashville has been named as an official Candidate Host City in the United Bid of Canada, Mexico, and the United States to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup; and
WHEREAS, Nashville is one of 23 cities in the United Bid vying to be one of the 16 cities selected to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup; and
WHEREAS, Nashville's bid is part of the most comprehensive and far-reaching hosting strategy ever developed for a sporting event, offering the possibility of welcoming the world to a united and inclusive celebration of soccer at Nissan Stadium; and
WHEREAS, if the bid is successful then it will be the largest event of any kind that Nashville has hosted in its history, with attendees and viewers from all over the world; and
WHEREAS, hosting an event of this kind and magnitude provides Nashville with a unique opportunity to showcase itself internationally as a welcoming, friendly, and inclusive city.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
